Can Our Justice System Support Accountability?

Dear Friend of RRHM,

Do you believe we owe it to ourselves to hold our leaders accountable? This is not just in our interest, but also the interest of our country.
Yet we cannot achieve this on our own, we need the support of our justice system. Sadly, in recent times, little can be said about the efficacy of our justice system, and the integrity of our lawmakers.

Let’s take a look at the UK where a cross-party group of Members of Parliament (MP) want to make a fresh effort to hold former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair to account for allegedly misleading parliament and the public over the Iraq war. This is because there is a disparity between what Blair publicly told the Chilcot inquiry into the war and privately, including assurances to then US president George W Bush.

In Nigeria, time and again, we’re being slammed with stories of corrupt government officials and politicians, who are blatantly looting our country dry, yet we have never come close to holding such people accountable.

Perhaps the reason why we will never come close is because we, the citizens are also failing in being accountable. After all he who points a finger at someone forgets that three are pointing back at him.
Yet, our hope may very well lie in the quote by Margaret Mead:

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Our question to you is: Are you part of that small group of thoughtful, committed citizens? Ponder on this, and if you truly desire change, then you know which group you ought to belong to.
