This Man Cried Out And Nigerians Came To Help

Last week, we shared the story of the honest taxi driver. This week it is about a commercial tricycle rider (popularly known as Keke) who cried out for help and got more help than he had ever hoped to get.

Emmanuel Nweke’s wife had been delivered of their first child by Caesarean section and they didn’t have enough money to clear the bill. He had the daily fee of N20,000 to pay for the tricycle he was riding, in order to make up the sum of N800,000 before he could take ownership of the tricycle. So it was quite a heavy financial burden to survive that and then his wife’s hospital bill. He had only been able to make a deposit of N10,000 and the hospital had said they would detain his family until he was able to pay the complete sum.

After unsuccessfully trying to raise the money from among friends, family and church members, he took pictures of his wife and newborn son, went to the social media platform Twitter and made an appeal for help to raise the sum of N170,000 and Nigerians responded.

“Please help me Nigerians my wife and child have been held up in the hospital since November 6th, 2019 bcos we are unable to settle the Medical Bills she gave birth through C.S which we didn’t plan towards it..I’m a Keke Napep Driver I’m pleading on you all to help me please,” Emmanuel tweeted on Monday, December 2.

Contributions came pouring in from Nigerians at home and abroad, exceeding the amount he had asked for and going over N1,000,000. Some Nigerians also sent baby items such as diapers, baby carrier, high chair amongst other gifts. The baby’s name is Praise.

What is very worthy of note about Emmanuel’s case is his transparency and show of accountability. He kept updating his Twitter feed with screenshots of every alert that came in. Emmanuel says he plans to use the remaining money to set up a business for his wife so that they have another source of income in their family.

We want to thank Our Dearest Nigerians for Helping us Pay our hospital Bills which gave us the opportunity to go home today after 29 days at the hospital. We got more than the required amount because of your love and care We Appreciate and God Bless you All. pic.twitter.com/mDK9E9EOtQ
